QGIS Going Closed Source

Due to long-standing issues and the inability to control and manage the source code, QGIS is going closed source effective today, 2009-04-01. The software is no longer licensed as free software but rather is to be managed by a consortium made up of several key developers.

The new consortium has been incorporated under the name FFOPIR. All developers and users not part of the consortium must remove all QGIS source code from their machines. In order to facilitate the code cleansing, FFOPIR will be providing an address where you must ship your computer so we can perform the removal. Cost for shipping and return will be borne by the individual. A $100 US fee per machine will be assessed during the cleansing.

Users are not affected by the changes until the 1.1 release, at which time a license fee will be required. A licensing structure has not been established, however it will parallel that of the leaders in proprietary GIS. Those using QGIS on free operating systems will be billed an additional 50% above the normal license fee. Any use of QGIS or it's source code after 2009-04-01 without strict written permission will constitute a violation of FFOPIR rights.

Under the new structure, Python plugins will be billed on a per-click basis. Usage of QGIS will require registration and a credit card on file to facilitate the real-time billing. As part of the transition, all Python plugins are now owned by and part of the FFOPIR. Those wishing to develop new plugins must purchase the Python Integration Guild (PIG) SDK. Pricing for the SDK will be released soon.

As part of our goal to enhance and further QGIS, the code base will be converted to a more flexible and intuitive language, rich in TUI design possibilities. Currently the choices being considered are FORTRAN and COBOL. While these changes will be transparent to most users, some may experience flashbacks to the days of character based (curses) applications. We believe these changes will provide a rich user experience, significantly different than any GIS software on the market today. The engineering department is working hard to solve the problems related to vector and raster display on character based devices.

In conclusion, the FFOPIR effect will be big. While some may not agree with these changes, we are convinced that they are in our own best interests.

Again, the key date for these changes is 2009-04-01.

Fun's Over

Ok, fun's over, comments closed before this turns into a fan-boy competition...

Too bad it's not true

Too bad it's not true - it'd probably be more usable and viable.

None Closed QGIS

it is impossible for a project as good as this is closed, everything is the fault of microsoft!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

good bye QGIS! Nice meeting

good bye QGIS! Nice meeting you!
I will consider gvSIG, they seem to be quite serious.
Ahh by the way....
Don't forget that in other countries, april 1 is just another day, maybe I'll come back on december 28, it's "Dia del inocente" in Argentina.

TUI

As a staunch Kiwi I assumed you meant http://www.tui.co.nz/tui_2008/

gvsig user

who cares??

Go to gvSig! QGis não fará

Go to gvSig!

QGis não fará falta.

Check ThePirateBay.org

I'm sure there will be a torrent of the closed source Qgis on ThePirateBay.org soon...

Geographic Information Systems want to be Free!

Go to gvSig!

Go to gvSig!

Revived

After I was revived from passing out on the floor from the subject heading, I got to read the rest of the article. Great one! Always nice to start the day with a smile.

I have built a drone arduino

I have built a drone arduino powered, and I will use it to send my QGIS pc to you.
Have patience for any delay,

Andrea

Got me

You got me! This announcement was republished in local GIS page www.gisnet.lv and it really scared me. First I was WTF?!? Only later I remembered to look at calendar. Good one. Cheers!

Bet an April fool try

I bet this should be a April fool try. Gary has linked the date to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_fools_day

choices

I would love to see a FORTRAN version of QGIS. For the plugin language, instead of PIG I recommend the flexible DOS batch language, just to remember the "ECHO" powered TUIs when 640KB were enough for a mortal being

:-)

Is this an All Fool's Day joke?

Am sure it is an All Fool's Day joke :-)

that's no true

noooooooooooooooooooooo, that's no true... @#@@##@"!!!!

Caught out

I was suitably sucked in, especially since my team were asking my permission to copy the svn repository, fork it, and create an OpenQGIS project.

Not the right place

I don't think it is the right place to play jokes

Too serious

In that case I would say you take yourself far too seriously.
